The five best science fiction movies

From using plastic toys in the first Godzilla or King Kong movies in the early ’90s to the fantabulous visual effects in the 2021 film ‘Godzilla vs. Kong’, movies have come a long way. How amazing did it feel to watch ‘Avengers: Endgame’ in 3D? Entertainment and the technology associated with the industry have evolved to a level where we can hardly imagine anything better than it. With cutting-edge tech, movies are even more appealing to us now, especially sci-fi ones that are mostly replete with Visual effects (VFX) and Computer-generated imagery (CGI).

We all seek an escape to world of fiction to dissolve the day’s exhaustion. What’s better than a science fiction movie to bring us back on track and fill us up with a new energy for the next day?

Here’s a list of our favourite five sci-fi movies that we think are and will always remain evergreen for entertainment.

  1. Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi

Is the Star wars series the best or the best? The brainchild of George Lucas, the world of Star Wars presents a world that has it all -emotion, rebellion, light-saberaction and what not. The best part? Everything happens in space, in the classic Star Wars way! And when it comes to ‘The Return of the Jedi’, theirs is nothing better than this. As Luke Skywalker strives to bring his father back from the Dark Side to the Light Side of the Force, we can feel our hearts beat with all that Luke feels. And finally when Darth Vader turns against the evil Sith Emperor and returns to the light as Anakin Skywalker again, it feels that we ourselves have emerged victorious. A plethora of emotions is what ‘The Last Jedi’ creates in us. For all those who haven’t watched it, what are you waiting for? And for all those who know, may the Force be with you.

  1. 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)

Stanley Kubrick’s classic 1968 film is probably the most astounding and visionary sci-fi film ever made. Be it background scores, visual effects or theme, the film excels in all. Regarded as “culturally, historicallyand aesthetically significant” by the United States Library of Congress, the film is about a voyage to Jupiter with the sentient computer HAL after the discovery of an alien monolith. It deals with themes of existentialism and human evolution in the most aesthetic way possible. Hate it or love it, you are sure to be amazed by it with the Star Gate sequence as the grand finale. Remember the social media storm a couple of months ago regarding the appearance of monoliths in various parts of the world? Such is the cult following of this masterpiece. It’s a must watch if you are looking to please your eyes and feed your mind.

  1. Jurassic Park (1993)

It’s a cardinal sin to leave out Steven Spielberg’s ‘Jurassic Park’ when we are talking about revolutionary visual effects and science fiction films coming together to create sheer brilliance. A park full of prehistoric creatures that we have read about only in books – how amazing is that? Playing around and petting the cute ones until the apex-predator gets out of its cage. The fear and destruction created by the T-Rex is what makes the movie out of the world. For once didn’t we feel the dinosaurs to be fake when we watched it as kids. Even now, when we are familiar with better visual effects, the movie is sure to create goosebumps. From eight to eighty, it’s a film for all.

4.  E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial

Do aliens exist? Is there life on other planets? We have been seeking the answer for generations. The master of sci-fi Steven Spielberg had brought to us the first-of-its-kind movie where we see a human boy befriending an alien and helping him return home. E.T.’ is one of the best sci-fi films you’ll find on Netflix. The film not only generates emotion but also presents awesome visual effects and CGI techniques. Can we ever forget the classic scene where E.T. reaches his ship riding the flying cycle on a moonlit night?

5. Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991)

The machine apocalypse -Artificial Intelligence (AI) taking over the world has been a theme of science fiction movies for decades. And combining this with cool, fantastic action sequences and visual effects – what can be better for a leisurely Sunday than an action-packed movie where a human befriends a mechanical terminator and teaches him to smile. The thumbs up at the end of the movie surely brought tears in your eyes, didn’t it? The James Cameron masterpiece is one of the most recognised sci-fi action movies of all time. This is the same director who revolutionised the world of visual effects by his film ‘Avatar’. Well, what more to say than “Hasta la vista, baby”?

Films remind us how we have grown, how we have adopted so many things for evolution. Whole stories packed in a couple of hours have brought us respite for ages and continue to do so still.
